Shortly the last visible sign of Kingship will disappear in Nepal with the country’s central bank announcing today to drop the king’s face from bank notes. Nepal’s central bank has issued directions on Thursday to banks and all financial institutions not to accept such notes from mid April next year, when the Nepali New year begins.

Nepal replaced former king Gyanendra’s face with a picture of the world’s highest peak, 8,848 metre Mount Everest on all new currency in 2007 after parliament voted to stamp out the 240-year-old Hindu monarchy. But old notes bearing the portrait of the unpopular king Gyanendra have remained in circulation.

Central bank spokesman Gopal Kaphle said the old notes would be phased out by the end of the current Nepalese year, which falls in mid-April 2011. He also said ‘We are trying to circulate clean notes. The old notes will be replaced by new notes, and we are getting rid of notes with a picture of the former monarch,’

So the era of 240-year-old Shah dynasty came to an end.
